Post-WWI essays Following World War I, the United States entered a period of great prosperity. The prosperity of the Roaring Twenties kept many Americans from seeing the growing economic problems of the nation. Many said the economy of the 1920s was a house of cards. If one piece fails, the whole thing could collapse. As a result, America entered a deep economic depression. There were quite a few economic conditions in the 1920s that contributed to the stock market crashing in 1929. Economic hard times followed throughout the 1930s, called the Great Depression. After WWI, many tried to forget about the war. (Doc 2) They stopped conserving what they had to provide the soldiers abroad. The production industry turned to new technology, instead of gun manufacturing and such. Products were repeatedly bought with borrowed money, as opposed to their own money. (Doc 5) Americans had started buying unnecessary products on installment plans and credit. (Doc 3) This turned into an economic boom, where mass production took place. Automobiles were manufactured with an assembly line and many products ran on electricity. Markets were expanding greatly during the Boom Times of business, but stopped expanding the late 1920s. This is because most people who could afford cars, large appliances, and radios had already bought them, often on installment plans. There was an unequal distribution of wealth in the United States and most Americans didnt earn enough money to purchase these products. The resulting declining markets left business owners with huge surp luses, much larger than those that usually set the business cycle in motion. Businesses tried to sell their products abroad, but post-WWI was difficult in Europe. An Analysis of Tone in The Road Not Taken, a Poem by Robert Frost Robert Frosts work The Road Not Taken conveys a very simplistic, yet introspective theme. The poem describes the dilemmas and choices one must make in life, and how those specific decisions affect that person. Frost establishes this theme with an allegorical illustration of two paths in the woods. Later in the poem, the author reveals the attributes and personality of the main character as he or she contemplates past life choices. This characterization helps to bridge the gap between the reader and the character, allowing the poem to communicate a deeper resonance. Frost strengthens the readers figurative presence in the poem by presenting such emblematic diction and setting. As the second stanza begins, the character states that he or she hastily chose the grassy trail which, according to the theme, is not wise. The author seems to suggest that the character is highly impulsive, while also adventurous, considering that he or she is wandering through the forest, almost aimlessly. As the story progresses, however, the character seems to be regretful of the choice he or she has made. For instance, as the character walks, he or she begins to seem fearful that the opposite path may have been more alluring or aesthetic. This becomes evident in the third stanza, stating, And both that morning equally lay / In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way lead s on to way, / I doubted if I should ever come back. (lines 11-15). Understanding the characters feelings again strengthens the relationship between the reader and the character, making the authors reflective tone and solemn message become even more compelling. The final figurative element Frost incorporates into the poem is diction. This becomes prominent in the final stanza, as it reveals the characters regrets. I shall be telling this with a sigh / Somewhere ages and ages hence: / Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-/ I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made all the difference. (lines 16-20). With use of the word sigh, Frost delineates the characters dissatisfaction with his or her choice. In the conclusion of the poem, the character, realizing that he or she had made the wrong choice, suggests that if the other path had been taken, he or she would have made the better choice. This ties in with Frosts tone as it is represented in the characters regrets. National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Essay

I. Historical Background The initiative to establish a parish on Retiro Street began in 1941, with the request of the Capuchins in the Philippines to the Rev. Michael ODoherty, Archbishop of Manila. On march 28, 1942, a decree was issued establishing the Sta. Teresita del Nino Jesus Parish, the original name of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Construction of the church, however, was delayed because of World War II. Enshrined within the temporary church was the image of our Lady of Lourdes. To keep the image safe during the war, it was moved from place to place, until it rested for a long time in the chapel of Sta. Teresita on Mayon Street. On February 10, 1951, the image was brought back to Sta. Teresita Parish on Retiro. In 1997, on the forty-fifth foundation anniversary, Our Lady of Lourdes parish was declared a national shrine, with the approval of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines. It has its own parochial school offering education from pre-school to high school. II.
